The Decision

“I needed to grow. The thought made me scared because I knew everything would have to change.”

Alphonsus had never shared his story before. The worried look on his granddaughter’s face prompted the flow of a story long forgotten.

“Leaving my Eastern hometown to be an apprentice in my Uncle’s electronic store in Northern Nigeria was a tough decision for me. The North? I had never been, but stories of a different and harsh culture were rife. Unfortunately, I had a bias.

On arriving at the last bus stop up North, I had to ask for directions to get to my uncle’s. It was dark and scary. I spoke to a dark, young-ish-looking chap who didn’t know the way. To my surprise, he showed me to someone who helped me with the directions. Then I realized I forgot my money at the last food stop. I approached the young man from before. He paid for my cab fare and gave me his contact details. The friendship you know today began that day.

Chiamaka, open your heart, he might be from another tribe, but you care about him. Give him a chance.”
