The mythology of the “Ramakien,” which is Thailand’s adaptation of the Indian epic, the Ramayana, is one of the country’s most well-known cultural tales.

Prince Rama and his wife Sita are depicted in the Ramakien as having been banished to the jungle by Rama’s stepmother. Sita was abducted by the demon king Ravana while she was in the jungle, and Rama had to save her with the aid of his devoted monkey army.

The tale has several distinctive components in the Thai version, such as the presence of the earth deity Phra Mae Thorani and the ocean god Phra Phrom. Additionally, local practices and traditions have been incorporated into the Ramakien through the use of Thai traditional dance and music.

The Ramakien has been a significant part of Thai society for many years, and important ceremonies and festivals frequently feature its performance. As a representation of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage and ties to its Southeast Asian neighbours, the epic has also been used to foster national identification and unity.
